In order for your vehicle's engine to run in the proper manner, your car is equipped with either a timing belt or timing chain. Most vehicles will have a timing belt. However, older cars and a few new cars will have a timing chain.

A timing belt needs to be serviced and changed. A timing chain is designed to last for the life of your car. A timing belt is made of a heavy rubber material with grooves on one side. The timing belt is much thicker than the other belts in your car. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you have the timing belt changed at around the 100,000-mile mark.

You should have your timing belt checked for any unusual wear when you take your vehicle in for its regular service. If you notice a whining sound from the motor, you need to get the timing belt checked right away.
